A Harvest Story
A Harvest Story was born from author Kendall Wicks' desire to find a children's book that truly captured the essence of harvest time on the Canadian Prairies. Tasked with bringing her poetic vision to life, the illustration process began with a deep dive into the heart of farm life in Saskatchewan, translating her words into vibrant, tangible art.
The Collaboration
Collaboration was key to this project's success. Working closely with author Kendall Wicks and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK), the illustrations for A Harvest Story evolved from initial sketches to a full-colour storybook. The process involved virtual meetings to ensure every detail, from the combines to the prairie sky, authentically reflected the spirit of Saskatchewan farming and community.

The Artistic Style
To truly capture the heart of A Harvest Story, my artistic style was meticulously crafted to evoke the vibrant essence of the Canadian Prairies. From the outset, the goal was to infuse the illustrations with bright colours and a playful illustrative style, reflecting the wonder and dynamism of farm life. A significant emphasis was placed on showcasing the iconic Saskatchewan skies, transforming them into characters in their own right.
The Final Product
The final illustrations for A Harvest Story are more than just pictures. They are a tribute to the dedication of farmers and the beauty of reaping what is sown. From the first line art to the final digitally-painted spread, the artwork aimed to create a poetic and inclusive glimpse into farm life, inspiring children to understand and appreciate the food on their tables. The book stands as a testament to how visual storytelling can make a deep emotional connection and honour the agricultural community in Saskatchewan and beyond.
